Field notes
The assignment arrived with a photograph, an address, and the word “routine.” Someone had underlined the word. That usually means the opposite.
The photograph showed a doorway. The address led to a doorway. I recorded this as the first confirmed detail.
The woman inside asked whether I wanted coffee. I said yes. We spent a few minutes discussing the rain. She’d put a towel by the door so I wouldn’t leave water on the floor.
The departmental note described her as evasive. She answered my questions, then asked two of her own. Apparently the distinction depends on who is holding the form.
I couldn’t establish what the department wanted established. Bryant said I should be more certain. I asked which direction he had in mind.
I returned the assignment and requested reassignment. The request came back asking for additional grounds. I attached the same report.
Redacted: Interview exchange
She asked whether the equipment could actually tell me anything about her. I said it could tell me when the batteries were low. I couldn’t promise much beyond that.
